Educate and re-educate your sons, daughters and other young people that you influence about respectful behaviors and healthy relationships.
“Love is what creates the freedom and relaxation to be who we truly are.” – S.D. Giten
“My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived and let me watch him do it.” – Clarence Kelland
Fathers and other male role models play a key role in shaping boys’ attitudes and behaviors towards women and girls, starting at an early age. If you are a father, grandfather, uncle, coach or mentor, think about ways that you can model and teach respect and empathy to the children and youth in your life. Look for opportunities to teach and model what healthy relationships are to your children through your interactions with your spouse/partner and with others.
As children grow into their teen years, take the time to nurture their self-image and esteem, helping them to have a clear understanding of who they are and what they deserve in a healthy dating relationship. Explain that healthy relationships are built on trust, respect and open communication, allowing each person within the relationship to pursue their goals, spend time with friends and make their own decisions.
